"Own Your Own Success"--Sheryl Sandberg
The first time I had heard about Sheryl Sandberg was actually before “Lean In” was written. Someone had mentioned her to me, so I read through her Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheryl_Sandberg) and was automatically blown away by her. Her impressive decision to leave Google to join Facebook in 2008 really made me start looking up to her. I believe that life is about taking risks; you’ll never make advancements if you never take risks. Sandberg has managed to make it to the top of many lists, including Fortune Magazine’s “Most Powerful Women in Business,” Forbes’ “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,” and in Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Her incredible success, however, does seem to attract a lot of negativity from society; which is really just how life works. Many people appeared to have disliked Sheryl Sandberg even before the whole controversy over “Ban Bossy” began. Many view her as just some snobby, rich woman who graduated from Harvard |
and has it all, without taking into account what she’s done to get herself to the point she’s at today. Things weren’t just handed to her; she definitely worked for it.
In Sheryl’s Sandberg’s book, “Lean In,” she mentions that she was “raised to believe that girls could do anything boys could do and that all career paths were open” (14). I think it’s very important in today’s society to ensure children that they can choose whichever career path their heart desires. I strongly believe that there shouldn’t be any career paths that are ‘just for men’ or ‘just for women.’ Even though men and women are very different from each other, no one man or woman is identical to any other man or woman. Men aren’t simply a composition of certain traits that are only valuable in certain careers, and the same goes for women. If people stopped focusing so much on which careers society expects men and women to enter in to, everyone would end up in a career that they actually enjoy.
